My best friend/sister Tobey and I have had a BIG dream for as long as we can remember: get the hell out of the cold for the winter.
Living in the Northeast can be brutal, especially during January and February. The older we got, the more intolerant we became of freezing temperatures, nor’easters, weather-related cancellations, worrying about falling on the ice, and having to gear up with hats, scarves, and gloves just to get the mail.
We longingly dreamed of winter days filled with basking in the sunshine (as opposed to freezing our asses off while bitching about how much we hated the cold).
Of course, making a dream come true is easier said than done. Having the dream is the easy part, overcoming all of the obstacles that stand in the way is the hard part.
How did we go about making our dream come true?
First, there were the logistics.
Where my job as a Life Coach can be done anywhere as long as I have a phone and WiFi connection, Tobey was a Library Media Specialist in an elementary school.
We simply had to wait...and wait...and wait... and wait.
But finally, in June of 2016, Tobey was ready to retire.
Of course there was the obstacle of money.
While 4 out of 5 of our children were done with college, my youngest still had one more semester to go (i.e. we still had one more semester of tuition to pay) so I really wasn't able to afford it quite yet.
So we changed our plan from going away for 2 months to going away for one month and my unbelievable sister said she would be able to foot the bill #blessed
Finally, we needed to get our husbands to be on board. Not the easiest of tasks. Even though we had been prepping them for years, they were not exactly thrilled when we actually started looking at condos to rent.
“You mean you are actually going to do this?”
“Yes Dear, we are! We can talk and facetime everyday. And, you can come and visit." Win-win!
So with our bags packed, and our bathing suits in tow, we boarded a plane and flew south hoping and praying that our dream would live up to all of our hopes and expectations.
Signs from the Universe
As soon as we walked into our rented condo, I noticed that the kitchen tile and granite countertops were the exact same ones that I had in the house where I raised my family.
On our first night there, we went to the beach to watch the sunset and the only thing we could see in the night sky was the bright North Star. The North Star is the main metaphor I use in my Life Coaching practice. It represents the life that you are meant to live, your best life, your joy, your destiny.
As we started meeting the super friendly people down here, we noticed that many of the them were from Ohio. Tobey and I grew up in Ohio. There was even a bar named Captains Curt’s and it proclaimed itself to be Home of the Buckeyes, the official Ohio State Bar. We went to Ohio State.
Our BIG dream was a long time in coming. For years we talked about it and kept it clear in our vision. We waited patiently. And slowly but surely dealt with all of the obstacles in our way.
We are having the most amazing time!
P.S. So what about you? Do you have a Big dream? Are you following it, nurturing it, thinking about it, talking about it? Are you taking small action steps to make it happen?
If not, what are you waiting for? If you need any help along the way, let me know!
